Using your understanding of metamorphosis, you will research the entire egg-to-butterfly process of the monarch butterfly & one (1) North American butterfly. Create a note catcher (note taking / note making) to research the process of metamorphosis. Use your notes from classroom videos as well as information from National Geographic’s website to research the metamorphosis of the monarch butterfly:

Using your research information create a children’s book for a 5th grader that answers the following questions:
Part I:
- What is metamorphosis? Name and explain each step, draw a diagram for each step.
- What are the characteristics of the monarch butterfly? What do they look like? Who discovered them?
- Where do they migrate from? Where do they migrate to? What do they eat?
- What problems do they face during their migration? Be specific.
- How has their habitat changed over the years?
- How does human action impact their survival?
- What flowers do they attach their eggs to? Draw a picture of the butterfly & flower.
Part II:
2) Choose one of the following North American Butterflies (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/463096774167751223/) and research the metamorphosis of that butterfly. Provide the following information:
- What are the characteristics of your chosen North American Butterfly? What does it look like? Who discovered them?
- Where do they migrate from? Where do they migrate to? What do they eat?
- What problems do they face during their migration? Be specific.
- How has their habitat changed over the years?
- How does human action impact their survival?
- What flowers do they attach their eggs to? draw a picture of the butterfly & flower.
Part III:
3) Compare the habitat and characteristics of the monarch butterfly to your North American butterfly. How are they similar? How are they different? Explain why it’s important to make sure that all butterflies survive? What can you do to ensure their survival?
